Tuggerah Lakes Care is a community group focused on the rehabilitation and care of Tuggerah lakes and their estuary and catchment system. Tuggerah Lakes consist of three interconnecting lakes: Tuggerah Lake, Budgewoi Lake and Lake Munmorah situated on the Central Coast, NSW, 90 kms north of Sydney and form part of the Wyong Shire. The three lakes flow to the sea through a single narrow channel at The Entrance, a popular tourist destination.
Over the years the lakes have struggled to remain in pristine condition due to man-made interference such land clearing, commercial fishing, rutile mining (1969), a thermal power station (1967-2012) and general urban development. Impacts include increased stormwater runoff, higher nutrient & sediment levels, increased water temperature & weed growth and sand shoaling at The Entrance. All of which effect water quality and flows.
Tuggerah Lakes Care aims to bring together our community with local council, state and federal government support, in a transparent and consultative manner, to improve the overall health of the lakes, better manage the Entrance to improve water flows and help reduce the risk of flooding, for the benefit of all.
